I was supposed to write this entire blog about how I hate those headsets that people shove in their ears when they want to look like first class D-bags. I started by writing out several reasons why I don’t like them, but it all sounded cliché and boring. I tried going witty, but it didn’t help. I got tired, and I got hungry. Then I made myself a sandwich and forgot to finish what I started.

One day later, I got a call from my cousin, a headset user, who had just finished writing his pro-headset blog praising the device as practically the second coming. I had to fire back my rebuttal. Yes, folks, I used the word rebuttal!

Now my cousin’s blog was organized quite well. He’s not one of the masses, and the idea of him using the headset is different than the idea of faceless rejects using the headset. But! And I stress that “but” with complete conviction… I still find the device repugnant!

Now, why would I say that? Well… I think it comes down to one very simple point. As man continues to merge with machine, the dude with the bionic phone will never be as cool as the dude with the bionic woman. If I have the choice of talking to someone at a restaurant, or sitting there, staring at a wall, and talking to someone through the headset, I’m far happier with the first option.

So, what does this all mean? My cousin. My dear cousin uses the device. Sure, he has his excuses about taking calls in the car, and tough state laws on cell phones, but is that really enough? Does hands free really make you free? I say stop being a slave to the little voice on the other end of the line. The technology age is just so… 90s. Today, It’s all about the real world. It’s time to hang up the phone!
